This old man was living amongst ancient rock carvings in the coastal town of Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) near Pondicherry in South India. I was exploring the area around the main sites as I normally do when anywhere of significant historical importance.
There are often interesting things going on outside of main tourist areas that can have more character and the authenticity that I look for in all my work. In this case I stumbled across this toothless, but very sweet man who seemed to be the guardian of this off the beaten track 7th century Pallavian carving and he was more than happy to have his photo taken.
Actually these are the moments that make travelling so spiritually uplifting as they restore faith in the essential good of humanity in all its extraordinary diversity. I have included it in the India collection for this reason.
